Practical shooting (USPSA)

Practical shooting puts speed, accuracy and power together in changing courses of fire. USPSA is the United States governing body under the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), with competition for shooters of all skill levels. Its divisions cover handguns, revolvers and pistol-caliber carbines. [1] [2] [15] [17] [19]

Governing body: United States Practical Shooting Association

How a match works

  1. Sign in, attend the safety briefing, walk the stages, then shoot with your squad. Match tear-down and clean-up follow the shooting. [4]
  2. At each stage, the Range Official reads the written stage briefing to the squad. It identifies scoring, targets, minimum rounds, the start position and procedure. After questions, competitors should be allowed a walkthrough of equal duration. [6]
  3. USPSA describes its stages as freestyle: competitors solve the challenge within the rules rather than following one prescribed solution. Classifiers and other special courses have their own requirements. [6] [32]
  4. A Range Officer (RO) issues commands, monitors safety and the stage requirements, and records your time, scores and penalties. [7]
  5. The start sequence is “Make Ready,” “Are You Ready?”, “Standby,” then the start signal. “Make Ready” begins the course of fire under direct RO supervision. If you are not ready, say so at “Are You Ready?”. The signal should follow “Standby” within 1 to 4 seconds. [33]
  6. At the end you hear “If You Are Finished, Unload and Show Clear.” After an RO stops a competitor, the command is “Unload and Show Clear.” The final command is “If Clear, Hammer Down, Holster” for self-loading handguns, “If Clear, Cylinder Closed, Holster” for revolvers, or “If Clear, Hammer Down, Flag” for PCC. Follow the RO through the required checks; wait for “Range Is Clear” before scoring or resetting. [34] [7]
  7. Short courses require 1 to 12 rounds; medium courses require 13 to 20 rounds. Long courses require at least 21 rounds, with a 32-round maximum at Level III or higher. Those are course-design rules, not a total ammunition allowance for your match. [32]

Where to compete

Use both official finders: USPSA specifically directs readers to club websites for matches missing from its central listings. Contact the Match Director before a first visit. [28] [4]

Run a club? Affiliate a club

Your first match

  1. Find a club and contact the Match Director. Search by address, zip code, county or state, then arrange your first visit with the Match Director. [27] [4]
  2. Confirm the first-visit requirements. Ask about the club’s safety check before making plans to compete. Some clubs administer it on your visit; others require a separate session. Watching a match first is one of USPSA’s suggested starting points. [3] [1]
  3. Check the division before buying gear. The firearm you already own may be suitable. Use the current division appendices to check equipment, and the approved list for Production or Carry Optics. USPSA advises against rushing to spend before you understand the sport. [3] [15] [18] [5]
  4. Confirm the match details with the club. Confirm registration, round count, match fee and any separate range charge. Check the club’s own website for matches absent from USPSA’s list or calendar. [28] [30]
  5. Arrive for sign-in and the briefing. Hear the written stage briefing, ask questions, then take the walkthrough. Say so if you are not ready when the RO asks “Are You Ready?”. [6] [33]
  6. Stay for reset and clean-up. After “Range Is Clear,” targets can be scored, patched and reset. USPSA includes match tear-down and clean-up in the first-match experience. [7] [4]

Never fired a gun at a range? Start with your first range visit.

What to bring

Bring eye and hearing protection to your first match, even where a league only recommends it. Check the host’s requirements before you arrive.

Eye and hearing protectionRequired
The rules require eye protection where ricochet debris or bullet fragments are a potential exposure, and adequate hearing protection where firearm sound may cause hearing damage. This includes people watching the match. [21]
Division-compliant firearm and ammunitionRequired
Check your chosen division’s firearm and ammunition requirements. Production and Carry Optics require approved handguns. [15] [18] [21]
Handgun holster and beltRequired
For handgun divisions, the rules specify the belt and holster setup and prohibit a holster that permits access to or activation of the trigger while holstered. Division-specific restrictions still apply. PCC has separate equipment rules. [21] [19]
Spare magazines or speed loadersRequired
USPSA’s beginner guide lists spare magazines or speed loaders as necessary equipment. Confirm the quantity for your division and match with the club. [3]
Belt carriers for spares, unless the briefing says otherwiseRequired
Rule 5.2.4 normally requires spare ammunition, magazines and speed-loading devices to be carried in belt-mounted retention devices designed for that purpose. The written stage briefing can specify another setup. [35]
Additional magazines or speed loaders in pocketsOptional
Rule 5.2.4 permits additional magazines or speed-loading devices in apparel pockets. This extra carrying option is not a requirement. [35]
PCC chamber safety flag or clear chamber deviceRequired
Outside a Safety Area or RO supervision and direct command, an uncased PCC must have a visible chamber safety flag or clear chamber device. [36]

What it costs

Published local example
The Klamath USPSA listing for 11/01/26 states a $15 match fee ($10 for Juniors), plus a park day-use fee of $10 per individual or $5 for persons 17 and under. These are that event’s published fees, not a nationwide match price. [30]
USPSA activity fees
The activity-fee schedule lists $1.50 per registered competitor per division for a Level I match without a classifier, $4.00 with 2 classifier stages, and $5.00 for a Level III match with up to 2 classifiers. This is the activity-fee schedule, not a quoted retail entry fee. [29]
Membership and club access
Use USPSA’s join or renewal flow for membership. USPSA membership does not include range or local club membership. [31] [3]

How scoring works

For Comstock and Virginia Count, hit factor is (scoring points − penalties) ÷ time. The highest hit factor earns the stage’s maximum available points; other competitors receive stage points relative to that performance. The match ranks competitors within each division by their combined stage points. [8] [9]

  • Comstock allows an unlimited number of shots, with time ending on the last shot and a stipulated number of hits counting for score. Virginia Count limits the number of shots. Fixed Time is different again: it limits both time and shots, and ranks competitors by net points rather than hit factor. [8]
  • Unless the written stage briefing says otherwise, the best two hits on each scoring cardboard target count. Scoring metal targets must fall to score. [10]
  • Major and Minor describe ammunition power-factor scoring, not skill classes. Appendix C2 calculates power factor as bullet weight in grains × average velocity in feet per second ÷ 1000, ignoring decimal places. Division rules determine which power factors and calibers qualify. [11] [12] [13] [24]
  • The target diagram shows the A, C and D zones and their Major/Minor points. A hits are worth 5 under either scoring power factor. Older B-zone targets count as C hits. [9]
  • Misses cost twice the maximum scoring-hit value, except for Fixed Time or the specified disappearing-target exceptions. A hit on a cardboard no-shoot has the same twice-maximum-value penalty. A procedural penalty is minus 10 points when the maximum cardboard hit is 5 points. [10]

Minor scoring only, minimum power factor 125 and maximum velocity 1600 feet per second. No magazine-capacity limit; optical sights and compensators/muzzle brakes are permitted. [19]

Classification

Your division is the equipment category; your class measures performance against a national standard. A classifier percentage compares your hit factor with that stage’s High Hit Factor. An initial classification requires at least four valid scores from different classifier courses. Reclassification uses the best six of the most recent eight valid scores. USPSA’s published brackets are Grand Master 95 to 110%, Master 85 to 94.9%, A 75 to 84.9%, B 60 to 74.9%, C 40 to 59.9%, and D 2 to 40%. A division classification cannot be more than one class below your highest class in another division. [24] [15]

Safety rules

  • A disqualification (DQ) ends your participation in that match. “Stop” means immediately stop firing and moving, then wait for the RO’s instructions. These are competition-rule summaries, not a replacement for the club’s safety briefing. [37] [33]
  • Carry a handgun unloaded in a case, bag or belt-mounted holster outside a Safety Area or RO supervision and direct command. Handle it only in a designated Safety Area or under an RO’s supervision and direct command. Handling it elsewhere is a DQ offense under rule 10.5.1. [22]
  • The rules distinguish carrying ammunition into a Safety Area from handling it there. Handling live or dummy ammunition, loaded magazines or loaded speed-loading devices in a Safety Area is prohibited. Rule 10.5.12 explains the distinction. [22]
  • Unsafe muzzle direction can cause a DQ: rule 10.5.2 covers pointing farther than 90 degrees rearwards from the backstop during a stage, and rule 10.5.5 covers sweeping a person with the muzzle. The rules include specific exceptions; learn the stage’s safe directions from the officials. [38]
  • Dropping a firearm during a stage, or while loading, reloading or unloading, is a DQ offense. A dropped gun must be retrieved by an RO. Dropping an unloaded firearm outside a stage is not itself an infraction, but retrieving it yourself is a DQ offense. [38]
  • Keeping a finger inside the trigger guard during movement when not aiming or shooting targets is a DQ offense. So is having a loaded firearm without an RO’s specific order, or a shot fired while loading, reloading or unloading. Those accidental-discharge rules include the “Make Ready” and final clearing procedures. [38] [37]

Match levels and major events

  • Level I: club matches conducted on a scheduled basis throughout the year. Appendix A1 recommends a minimum of 2 stages and 28 rounds; these are recommended minimums, not a typical match size. [23]
  • Level II: annual Sectional or State matches. Level III: annual championships conducted by USPSA Areas (1 - 8). Appendix A1 lists Nationals separately as annual USPSA championship matches. [23]
  • Categories are separate from equipment divisions and performance classes. Appendix A2 uses age on the first day of the match: Junior is under 18; Senior is 55-64; Super Senior is 65-69; Distinguished Senior is 70 or older. [39]
  • Appendix A2 defines Lady as a person registered female at birth who has two X chromosomes (XX). Military covers current Active, Reserve and National Guard service members; Law covers full-time, part-time and reserve personnel with arrest powers. Match Directors may request eligibility documentation. Unless otherwise specified, categories need division recognition and a minimum of 5 competitors in each division/category. [39]

Common questions

What is USPSA, and how is it related to IPSC?

USPSA stands for United States Practical Shooting Association. Its About page describes it as the U.S. national governing body of practical shooting under IPSC, the International Practical Shooting Confederation. This guide uses USPSA’s Competition Rules and divisions. [2] [5]

Can a beginner try USPSA?

USPSA describes participation for all skill levels and suggests finding a local club or watching a match first. Many clubs require a safety check before a newcomer competes, so arrange the first visit with the Match Director rather than assuming you can shoot immediately. [1] [3] [4]

Do I need USPSA membership for my first local match?

Appendix A1 recommends membership for Level I club matches. Rule 6.4.1 requires it for Level II and higher, accepting current membership in your IPSC region as well. National membership does not include local club or range membership. [23] [3]

How much does a USPSA match cost?

Fees depend on the event. Klamath’s published November 1, 2026 example and its separate park fee are listed above; ask your club about its own charges. USPSA activity fees are not a quoted event entry price. [30] [29]

How do I find USPSA matches near me?

The official club finder accepts an address, zip code, county or state. The match finder links local lists and calendars and State/Section, Area and National Championships. USPSA says to check club websites for matches not listed centrally. [27] [28]

What is the difference between Carry Optics and Limited Optics?

Both require a slide-mounted optic and use Minor scoring. Carry Optics restricts action types and approved models, prohibits external magwells, and caps weight at 59 ounces with optic and empty magazine inserted. Limited Optics has no handgun-specific approval or maximum weight, and its magazine rule includes the longer single-stack allowance. Check the full appendices for the exact firearm configuration. [18] [20]

Is Production still limited to 10 rounds?

No. The September 2026 Appendix D4 says a maximum of 15 rounds loaded in any magazine after the start signal. Limited-10 has the 10-round rule. [15] [14]

Can Limited-10 use an optic?

Yes. Appendix D3 in the September 2026 Competition Rules lists optical/electronic sights as permitted. Its magazine limit remains 10 rounds after the start signal. [14]

Can I compete with a PCC instead of a handgun?

USPSA has a Pistol Caliber Carbine division. Appendix D8 requires a stock, lists the permitted pistol calibers, and specifies Minor scoring only. PCC also has separate chamber-flag and transport requirements. [19] [36]

How many rounds should I bring?

Ask the club about the particular match’s requirements. A listed round count is not necessarily a packing allowance: Klamath’s November 1, 2026 listing calls its five stages “approx. 135 rounds.” [30]

How do I get a USPSA classification?

An initial class requires at least four valid scores from different official classifier courses. Your equipment division and performance class are separate; the classification section explains the percentages and later updates. [24]

Can I reshoot a classifier, and does it change my match score?

At match officials’ discretion, the official classification policy permits one reshoot per classifier stage, per division, per match, for classification purposes. The first score must still be used for match standings and awards. [24]

Glossary

Squad / written stage briefing
A squad shares a stage briefing. The RO reads the written instructions covering targets, scoring, firearm condition, start position and procedure to each squad before its walkthrough. [6]
Comstock / Virginia Count / Fixed Time
Scoring methods: Comstock allows unlimited shots; Virginia Count limits shots; Fixed Time limits shots and time. Each specifies how many hits count. [8]
Major / Minor
Ammunition power-factor scoring, not skill classes. A hits score 5 in either; Major and Minor award different points for C and D hits. [11] [9] [24]
Category
A recognition group within a division, separate from performance class. Appendix A2 lists Lady, Junior, Senior, Super Senior, Distinguished Senior, Military and Law. [39]
DQ / disqualification
Removal from the match for a safety infraction or other prohibited activity. [37]
Sweeping
Pointing the firearm’s muzzle at part of a person’s body. Rule 10.5.5 covers sweeping during a stage and its specified exceptions. [38]
Magazine well / magwell
The opening into which a magazine is inserted. Appendix D7 prohibits external magwells in Carry Optics. [41] [18]
Compensator / barrel ports
A device that redirects firearm gases, including for countering muzzle rise. The rulebook includes barrel porting and muzzle brakes in this definition. [41]
Double action / single action
With double action, a trigger pull momentarily cocks the hammer and lets it fall. With single action, the hammer must be reset separately before the trigger can release it again. [41]
Grain
A unit of bullet weight: 1 grain = 0.0648 grams. It is not a measure of the powder charge in the power-factor formula. [41] [11]
Notch-and-post sights
The non-optical sight type specified for Production and Single-Stack. Their division appendices prohibit optical/electronic sights. [15] [16]
Stage / course of fire (COF)
The rulebook uses “course of fire” and “stage” interchangeably. [25]
Hit factor
Scoring points minus penalties, divided by time, for Comstock and Virginia Count. [8]
Stage points
On hit-factor stages, points awarded relative to the stage winner. The match adds each competitor’s stage points within the relevant division. [8]
Power factor
Bullet weight in grains × average velocity in feet per second ÷ 1000, with decimal places ignored under Appendix C2. [11]
Division
An equipment category, such as Production or Carry Optics, with its own firearm and equipment requirements. [15] [18]
Class / High Hit Factor (HHF)
A performance bracket based on classifier percentages; the percentage compares a stage hit factor with its High Hit Factor benchmark. [24]
Classifier
A course of fire published by USPSA for competitors seeking national classification. [32]
No-shoot
A target that incurs penalties when hit. [25]
Fault line
A physical ground reference defining the limits of the shooting area. [25]
Array
A grouping of more than one target. [25]
Freestyle
Solving the challenge within the rules and engaging targets as they are available. [25]
RO / NROI
RO means Range Officer, the official issuing commands and monitoring the stage. NROI is the National Range Officers Institute. [7] [25]
PCC
Pistol Caliber Carbine, the division described in Appendix D8. [25] [19]
