The five-shot course
Lucky Gunner and KR Training attribute the original exercise to Gila Hayes. It begins from ready and requires five hits in a five-inch circle at five yards within five seconds. [1] [2]
Werner’s consecutive-success version
KR Training credits Claude Werner with adding five successful repetitions in a row. Clean completion of that version takes twenty-five rounds. [2]
One passing five-shot string meets the original course; five consecutive passes meet Werner’s added requirement. [2] [1]
Hayes, Wilson and IDPA 5×5
Wilson’s 5×5 and IDPA’s 5×5 classifier each use twenty-five rounds in four strings at ten yards. They share a name with Hayes’ exercise, not its five-shot format. [3] [4] [5]
| Name | Identifying structure |
|---|---|
| Hayes 5×5 | Five shots, five-inch circle, five yards, five seconds |
| Hayes / Werner repeatability version | Five consecutive successful strings |
| Wilson 5×5 | Four strings, 25 rounds, ten yards |
| IDPA 5×5 | Official four-string classifier with current IDPA scoring |
Repeatability
Werner’s version asks whether the same result holds across five consecutive strings. The record of those five results shows where a run of successes ended. [2]
